Like many other countries, Switzerland has seen a significant increase in the number of patent applications filed with the European Patent Office (EPO) in 2021, more precisely 8442 applications, which is an increase of 3.9 % compared to the year 2020. It thus takes the 7th place in the ranking of the “50 largest countries of origin of patent applications 2021”. The United States occupies the first place of the aforementioned ranking with 46,533 applications (+5.2 %), followed by Germany with 25,969 applications (+0.3 %) and Japan with 21,681 applications (-1.2 %). France, which is in 5th place, experienced a very slight decrease (-0.7 %) with 10,537 applications. Finally, it is important to note that the EPO is recording a new record for patent applications in Europe in 2021, with 188,600 applications, which corresponds to an increase of 4.5%.
