PATENTS – PATENT INDEX 2023 OF THE EUROPEAN PATENT OFFICE – SWITZERLAND
In 2023, the number of patent applications in Europe (199,275 applications) rose significantly in comparison with 2022 (193,460 applications), representing an increase of 2.9%.
Once again over this year, the most innovative sectors appeared to be digital communication, followed by medical technologies and information technology.
For the year 2023, the number of patent applications from Switzerland filed with the European Patent Office (EPO) rose again – more precisely, with 9,410 applications, which represents an increase of 2.7% as compared to the year 2022. As a result, the country keeps its seventh place in the rankings of the “ 50 top countries of origin of patent applications in 2023 ‘” and it is still the leader for the number of patent applications with respect to its population.
The United States continues to occupy first place in the said rankings with 48,155 applications (+ 0.4%), followed, as in 2022, by Germany with 24,966 applications (+ 1.4%), and Japan with 21,520 applications (-0.3%).
Finally, the new unitary patent system, in force since 1 June 2023, is proving to be a great success with proprietors of European patents.
