European Inventor Award 2021: Switzerland is honored….
On June 17, 2021, the European Patent Office (EPO) revealed the winners of the European Inventor’s Award in a ceremony organized entirely in digital format. This prize is intended to reward the creativity of inventors.
It is awarded in the following categories: industry, research, non EPO members, SME and life work.
In the research category, the winners are chemical engineers Wendelin Stark (Switzerland) and Robert N. Grass (Austria), inventors of a novel method for storing DNA data. Both researchers are professors at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, applicant for patent no. EP2831268A1- Molecular coding system.
The names of the other winners for the year 2021 are respectively for each category (Source EPO):
- Industry: Per Gisle Djupesland – Medical device to make nasal drug delivery more effective (Norway);
- Non EPO members: Sumita Mitra – Use of Nanomaterials in dentistry for filling materials (India/USA);
- SME: Henrik Lindström and Giovanni Fili – Modular solar cells for wearable devices (Sweden);
- Lifetime Achievement: Karl Leo – Further Development of Organic Semiconductors (Germany).
The winner of this year’s People’s Choice Award, chosen from among 15 finalists based on Internet votes, is Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic (Serbia/USA) for advances in the field of tissue engineering.
