EUROPEAN PATENT OFFICE (EPO) – UNIVERSITY PATENTS IN EUROPE
On October 22, 2024, the European Patent Office (EPO) published a study on university patent applications in Europe.
According to the EPO, this study is based on “data for 1,200 European universities that have generated patent applications at the EPO between 2000-2020.” It considers not only patent applications filed directly by universities, but also those done by other entities mentioning the names of researchers affiliated with these universities.
The leading countries which have filed the most university patent applications are Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Italy.
Switzerland is also very well positioned (top 10). The ETH Zurich holds the top spot over the reference period (2000-2020) with 2,219 patents, followed by the EPFL with 1,697 patents and the Universität Zürich with 930 patents.
