PATENT COOPERATION TREATY-MAURITIUS

On March 15, 2023, the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) will enter into force in respect of Mauritius, allowing applicants from Mauritius to file international applications for protection in PCT Contracting States, including Switzerland; and it will be possible to obtain protection in Mauritius using the PCT system.

The PCT offers a centralized procedure for filing an international application designating the PCT contracting countries and which has the same effect as a filing in each of these countries. This procedure allows the applicants to defer the decision on the countries in which protection will actually be sought.

With the accession of Mauritius, the PCT now counts 157 States. For the record, the last country to join the system was Cape Verde on July 6, 2022.
